Here are some lingerie terms to help you in your vintage lingerie purchases.
Lingerie Styles
- Babydolls - Babydolls are made of sheer fabric such as chiffon, nylon or silk and are often trimmed with lace, ruffles, bows or ribbons. Babydolls are short nightgowns that come no lower than the hips. Sometimes you will find them available with a matching pair of panties or robe.
- Corsets - Corsets are generally form fitting garments that include boning to help shape the mid section of the body. They often have supportive cups and lace up cinching in the back.
- Bustiers - Bustiers are similar to corsets. They are strapless and form fitting. Many include boning to help shape the mid area. Some may include attached garters for attaching stockings.
- Camisoles - Camisoles or Camis for short are designed to be worn under shirts & suits. They have thin spaghetti straps that are often adjustable. Camisoles can be either snug fitting or loose fitting and generally come to the hips.
- Chemises - Chemises are similar to camisoles but are longer in length. They can be worn as under garments or as night gowns. Some refer to a chemise as a slip.
- Garter Belts - Garter belts are worn around the leg and have adjustable straps with clasps to hold up stockings. Some of our garter belts come by themselves while others are attached to other lingerie such as corsets & bustiers.
- Teddie - A teddy is a one piece garment that is usually a combination of a camisole and thong into one.
- Full Slips- Longer than a camisole they generally come between mid knee length to knee length with adjustable shoulder straps.
- Half slips- As the name implies these start at the waist and usually end at knee length. Both the full slip and half slip can be fun and flirty and are among the most seductive of all lingerie products. Using such things as lace and chiffon in fabulous combinations.
Fabric Definitions
- Silk - Silk is a fabric made from fine threads produced by a silkworm. Silk is known for its softness.
- Satin - Satin is a shiny fabric woven from silk, rayon, nylon or other materials.
- Chiffon - Chiffon is a lightweight and sheer fabric made from nylon, rayon, silk or other materials.
- Spandex/Lycra - Spandex, or lycra, are man-made fabrics that are designed to be lightweight and highly elastic giving stretch to clothing & lingerie.
- Velvet - Velvet is smooth and soft to sight and touch and can be made from almost any material.
- Charmeuse - Charmeuse is a shiny & opaque fabric much like satin but is more lightweight and has more of a clingy sexy look.
